How to Book a DJ for a Wedding

Your wedding DJ sets the mood for the entire celebration. A great DJ reads the room, builds energy, and keeps guests on the dance floor until the lights come on. A bad one clears it. Here is how to find, evaluate, book, and manage a wedding DJ — step by step.

1. Start Early — 6 to 12 Months Before

The best wedding DJs book up fast, especially for peak season (May–October). Start your search at least 6 months out. For destination or luxury weddings, 12 months is safer. Create a shortlist of 3–5 DJs whose style matches your vibe — listen to their mixes online before reaching out.

2. Ask the Right Questions

Before booking, ask: How many weddings have you played? Can I hear a wedding-specific mix? Do you take song requests? What equipment do you bring? What is your backup plan if you fall ill? Do you provide lighting? Can we meet before the event? The answers will tell you whether this is a professional or someone winging it.

3. Discuss the Timeline

A wedding DJ needs to know the full timeline: ceremony music (if involved), cocktail hour, dinner, first dance, parent dances, speeches, cake cutting, party set. Each moment has different energy. Share your wedding schedule and discuss transitions — a smooth handoff from dinner music to dance floor is what separates good from great.

4. Sign a Contract

Never book a wedding DJ without a written contract. It should cover: date, venue, set times, total fee, deposit amount and due date, cancellation terms, equipment provided, overtime rate, and a force majeure clause. A 50% deposit on signing with the balance due 14 days before the wedding is standard.

5. Communicate Your Music Preferences

Most wedding DJs send a questionnaire asking for must-play songs, do-not-play songs, and general style preferences. Fill this out thoroughly — it is the DJ's roadmap. Include genre preferences (soul, funk, house, pop, hip-hop), the first dance song, and any culturally specific music for multicultural weddings.

6. Manage the Day

Assign a wedding coordinator or best man as the DJ's point of contact on the day. The DJ should not have to hunt for answers about the schedule. Provide load-in access 2–3 hours before guests arrive. A brief soundcheck ensures everything works before the first guest walks in.
