Music Industry Booking Terms
Essential vocabulary for DJs, musicians, venues, and anyone involved in live music bookings.
Rider
A rider is a document attached to a performance contract that lists the artist's technical and hospitality requirements for a gig. It typically includes equipment specifications, sound system needs, stage setup, food and drinks, and logistics like parking and load-in times.
Backline
Backline refers to the equipment provided by the venue or promoter for a live performance. For DJs this typically means CDJs, a mixer, and monitors. For bands it includes amplifiers, drum kits, and keyboard stands.
Guarantee (Gage / Cachet)
A guarantee is the fixed fee paid to an artist for a performance, regardless of ticket sales or door revenue. Also known as "gage" in German-speaking markets and "cachet" in French-speaking markets.
Door Split
A door split is a payment arrangement where the artist receives a percentage of the ticket or door revenue instead of (or in addition to) a fixed guarantee. Common splits range from 60/40 to 80/20 in favor of the artist.
Soundcheck
A soundcheck is a pre-show audio test where the artist and sound engineer verify that all equipment is working correctly, set volume levels, and adjust the mix for the specific room acoustics.
Load-in (Aufbau)
Load-in is the designated time when artists and crew arrive at the venue to set up equipment before a performance. Known as "Aufbau" in German-speaking markets.
Flat Rate
A flat rate is a fixed price quoted for a private event such as a wedding, corporate party, or birthday. It covers the entire performance including preparation, travel, and equipment.
EPK (Electronic Press Kit)
An EPK is a digital portfolio that artists use to promote themselves to bookers, venues, and media. It includes a professional bio, high-resolution photos, music samples or mix links, press coverage, and contact information.
Deposit
A deposit is an advance payment made by the client to secure a booking date. Typically 25–50% of the total fee, paid on contract signing.
Cancellation Clause
A cancellation clause is a section in a performance contract that defines the terms, penalties, and refund conditions if either party cancels the booking.
Force Majeure
Force majeure is a contract clause that frees both parties from liability when an extraordinary event beyond their control prevents the performance from taking place.
Set (Slot)
A set is a continuous performance time block assigned to an artist. Also called a "slot" when referring to scheduling within a multi-artist event or festival lineup.
